Virginia Wade is a former professional tennis player from Great Britain who enjoyed success during the 1970s. She was born on July 10, 1945, in Bournemouth, England. Wade is best known for winning the women's singles title at Wimbledon in 1977, which was also the Queen's Silver Jubilee year.
Throughout her career, Wade won a total of three Grand Slam singles titles, with her other two victories coming at the US Open in 1968 and the Australian Open in 1972. She also had success in doubles and mixed doubles competition, winning a total of four Grand Slam doubles titles.
In addition to her Grand Slam success, Wade was a member of the British Fed Cup team and also represented Great Britain in the Olympics. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1989 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the sport.
After retiring from professional tennis, Virginia Wade has worked as a television commentator and has remained involved in the tennis community. She is considered one of the greatest British female tennis players of all time.
